Starseeds 101: What’s My purpose?
I’m here as a Starseed… so what’s my purpose??
Thanks for being here! If you’d like to sponsor a book purchase for me, you can do so here:

I don’t make any money from Medium, or YouTube, and taking clients is the only way I’m currently bringing in cash. (working on expanding that… stay tuned). If you like what you read or listen to for free on YouTube, sending a little note my way would really mean a lot. I also love your comments!! So leave those too! ❤
I cannot tell you how incredibly relieved when I finally got this question answered.
I had spent years knowing I was a starseed (an indigo child, actually, even though I’m “technically” too late in the generational realm to be classified as such). I’d met other starseeds, been in relationships with Starseeds, and had been running my YouTube channel for over a year. And yet, I still didn’t know what the hell my purpose was.
I had jumped from job to job, place to place, city to town to country, and still felt listless and lost with the gnawing desire of wanting to “go home” (i.e, leave here, this planet, this place). In desperation, I even went to a shaman (not a great idea for those of us who are form Starseed origins. We’re particularly cosmic, and the energies aren’t always in the clearest alignment with Earth-focused Shamanic practitioners), who, despite her best intentions, caused me to feel even further from my truth than ever before.
This sense of purposelessness persisted from childhood, when I used to stare up at the stars and feel in deeper connection with them than my own birth family, all the way until I began to write my full-length book, The Starseed Survival Guide, in 2020.
It wasn’t until I finally began to write the first draft that I got a direct download of what the purpose of Starseeds are here on earth. I was back in school, chipping away at an art degree that I tended to go back to when I was feeling particularly unsure of my direction in life. (Art school felt like a safe-haven, because at least I knew I could channel my creativity somewhere). Having somewhere to direct most of my time gave me structure I needed to harness the remaining freedom to write.
Here we are, back in school, and I’ve decided to finally start the Starseed Survival Guide. In the midst of writing one of the chapters about certain starseed traits and characteristics (hint hint, check out the “Why Am I Here?!” Article for more juicy info on that topic..) this direct download came through:
“The purpose of star children new souls on this planet is not to ‘be’ anything. Starseeds are direct channels of love. They bring the messages of peace, joy, love, deep feeling, and genuine innocence to the planet. As long as a Starseed is living in a way that makes them feel alive, welcomed and loved, they are completing their mission. As long as they are in a space that feels nurturing, safe, and allows for growth, they are completing their mission. There will be no job or career path that fits a particular starseed. The path to fufillment must be the path that makes them feel most comfortable in their skin and able to spread their wisdom and love. This will be their true calling.”
…Sounds easy enough, right?
I’m kidding.
So basically, we’re free wheeling.
Wheeeee.
What I mean by all of this is: Earthly souls that have reincarnated many times on this planet (i.e., not us), will generally have a particular magnetism to a of line of work: for example, perhaps they were the bricklayer for the sistine chapel, then they built rocking chairs for the elite, and in this life they happen to be into fine woodworking and craftsmanship, with their clientele trending towards musicians and celebrities. This draw to a particular type of work is in perfect alignment with their interests, their past lives, and a Je Ne Sais Quoi drive to move in that particular direction. (Ever met those kids that said they were going to be doctors from the time they were 6 and guess what, turned out to be doctors? They’re probably not starseeds).
The purpose Starseeds have on earth, however, is more about how they show up in the world and their impact on those around them — and is resultingly less tied to what it is they’re doing, exactly.
You with me?
For example: say you’re a Starseed, and you’re really into garbage. You love collecting knickknacks that other people have thrown out, and you end up getting a job at your local recycling depot, where you can pick through stuff that people were trashing and use it for your own up-cycled art. The job pays okayish, you live in an okayish apartment that you really love and feel cozy and safe in, and you have a really great cat. You’re not particularly attached to your job, and you definitely don’t feel like you’re answering some great ‘trash calling’ by working at the depot. You do, however, have an incredibly healing relationship with an older lady who lives in your apartment who you help out sometimes in bad weather. You’re also around your sister’s kids a lot, one of whom is a lot like you, highly sensitive and perceptive to the world around them— and as a result, struggles with school and childhood social contexts. You’re also part of a really amazing jazz choir community, where the folks you sing with often describe your energy as “infectious”, “insatiable” and “bright.”
This highlights a pretty typical career move in the lives of starseeds. The job is take-it-or-leave-it, and you may stay in it for a year, two, five, or even ten. It’s unlikely that you’ll stick it out for longer than that, unless you work for yourself and have your own business thing going. Your calling and purpose that surfaces in this lifestyle example is more about the quality of life you’re living and the ways in which you can influence those around you with love. I know it sounds hokey, but hey, you’re on a Medium reading about Starseeds, so you’ve followed me this far.
**Of note:
I know I used a super-successful Earth-life and a trash-collectin’ good-samaritan Starseed life, and I want to stress that it is absolutely NOT an exmaple of what we’re capable of as Starseeds. Want to be rich? You can fully do that as a Starseed. Want to be a successful, even famous musician as a Starseed? … Um, hello, have you Met Aurora? … I’m more hightlighting the trend towards lifestyle over particular discipline when it comes to happiness, purpose and fulfillment with a Starseed’s life. **
Because our purpose is essentially to “be an example of bright, loving energy to those around you,” there are a few things starseeds trend towards for professions, and a few things that are absolutely required for us to do. For example…
Must dos’ + Requirements for Starseed livin’:
Starseed’s mission is to remind others of the good, loving, harmonious qualities of life. In order to do that successfully, it is absolutely essential that you take good care of your basic needs. Ironically, because we’re trusting, tend to believe in the good in people (without checking for signs), have poor boundaries (energetic and otherwise), we’re really good at putting others before us. Like, really good. Get a good therapist, follow people-pleasing recovery accounts on instagram (I like @haileypagemagee), and YouTube the shit out of getting better boundaries (hint: The Holistic Therapist). You absolutely must put your self-care first — if you’re not thriving, you won’t have the capacity to share your light or educate, which means you’re not actually fulfilling your purpose. This in turns makes us sick, depressed, anxious, and gives us a tendency to fall into bad relationships. If we are here to be sources of light — we must keep ourselves lit.
Once we’ve got the needs, self-care and boundaries down (which seriously, do whatever you need to to make sure this is a priority) you can expand your dreaming to how you might enjoy occupying your time (for some of you this will be a chicken-and-egg thing — if you’re not doing something you enjoy, it’s going to be really hard to be healthy. Such is the nature of being a divine vessel of love for New Earth)!
Common Starseed Professions:
This is mostly going to take the format of a list. In general, Starseeds trend towards the Helping, Healing and Teaching professions. It’s not uncommon for Starseeds to also be artists and musicians as well, but I truly believe for those professions already fall under all three categories above.
Some common examples for starseed professions include:
Teachers
Coachers
Psychologists
Social Workers
Occupational Therapists
Assistant anything
Nurses
Doctors
Acupuncturists
Reiki Healers
Massage Therapists
Sound healers
Musicians
Childcare providers
School bus drivers
Bus drivers in general
Volunteer coordinators
Not-for-profit employees
Animal care workers
Vets
Rescue Shelter workers
Gardeners
Farmers
Cooks
Bakers
Cleaners
Life coaches
Youtube content creators
Public speakers
Writers
All artists
Silviculture workers
Trail guides
National park workers
Performers
Hospice workers

… and the list goes on.. (comment below if I missed one!)
To Sum it up:
I want to be very clear that you can be a starseed and still have a very strong calling for what you could be doing in order to support your highest spiritual path. In these cases, life will often feel incredibly resistant until you get your butt into alignment and surrender to this calling. For example, I have a dear friend who was a teacher — (in the Helping, Healing, Teaching world), and knew she was meant to leave the work she was doing to pursue her work as a spiritual guide full-time, but couldn’t get herself to make the leap. She ended up getting in a car accident that prevented her from returning to teaching, and, as a result, is one of the most successful intuitive healers I know. Now, your story doesn’t have to be that dramatic — but if you have a nagging feeling for something you’ve always wanted to do (for me it was being a writer), and you’re not doing it for one reason or another, chances are life is going to poke and prod at you until you make that shift. This, again, isn’t about that particular choice “fulfilling your purpose”, per say — it’s more that that thing you really want to do is going to be the thing that allows you to live in a higher vibrational state more of the time.
That being said, if you don’t really feel like you’ve ever had that drawn to anything in particular, and you feel like a total moron for jumping from job to job, place to place, career to career, you are absolutely not lost. You’re just a starseed. And how you show up in the world and demonstrate unconditional love is your purpose — not the thing that gives you a paycheck.
I hope this helps! Drop a comment below if this resonated with you.
