I got off the phone with an amazing client recently who couldn’t figure out why she wasn’t able to better recognize her guides. She had a great intuition, and was about a year into the ascension process with more knowledge and access to her higher self than anyone I had ever seen. She explained that she could connect with her guides, but every time she tried to ask a more complicated or complex question, she couldn’t discern what was being said.

After having a bit more of a chat, I realized what was going on.

Baby Steps

Relationships with guides (like all relationships), need to be developed over time — and when you first begin to connect with your guides, that relationship is in its stage of infancy.

We often start out too big when it comes to asking for guidance from our spirit guides. We want to have an entire conversation, but we haven’t yet learned the alphabet. It’s totally normal to want to jump ahead! Deepening your intuition and beginning to connect to your spirit guides is super exciting, we just need to develop a baseline for the language we’re going to be usign to speak with them.

Sooo… I created this list of how to connect with your guides in Basic spirit language!

Ask for confirmation

This is a key step in strengthening your relationships with your guides. Talking to spirit is like learning a new language. Think of the responses you often get from a toddler: Yes, No. When we’re first starting out, we want to keep things simple: instead of asking your guides for specific answers from questions, try asking them instead for confirmation. Let them know you need a sign that they’re present, that they’re listening, that they’ve heard you. You can even go so far ask to ask for yes/no responses, but don’t get any more complicated than that.

Asking for confirmation is a great way to begin to strengthen your relationship with your guides, as well as learn what type of intuitive you are — you might be someone who hears guidance (clairaudient) feels guidance (clairsentient), ‘knows’ the guidance coming through (claircognizant) or sees the guidance in visions (clairvoyant). Maybe you’re a combination of some or all four types (I use all four). By asking your guides for confirmation on a question you’ve asked or prayer you’ve had, you’re simultaneously deepening your relationship with your intuitive self, too!

Ask for signs and signals

When you first start connecting with spirit and your guides, it can feel a bit clunky and awkward.

“Did I really hear that from my guides or was it my own intuitive voice?”

“Am I imagining that piece of advice?”

To make things simple while you’re developing your relationship with your guides, it’s best to start out with simple, tangible signs and symbols to receive confirmation about the question you’ve asked. Feathers in your path, butterflies, random bird crossings and sounds (bells, horns, etc) are all pretty standard signs that communicate with you via the spirit world or your guides. Instead of asking a question with a complex answer, stick to asking for signs until you feel comfortable and confident in the signs you’re receiving. Everyone is different! Get to know which spirit signs align with you. This takes time, so give yourself the gift of patience and trust your gut. You’ll begin to notice certain objects, images or things that stand out to you. Can’t figure out where that random feeling attached to seeing that hummingbird came from? It’s probably a sign.

Ask for feelings

Another great way to ask for confirmation is to ask for a feeling or sensation that communicates to you that your message or prayer has been heard. This can be really effective in meditation — you may feel a wave of warmth, or a gentle breeze, or a light shiver or goosebumps in return for the request. Strengthening your relationship with your guides takes many and all forms — asking for a physical response in confirmation is a great way to deepen the relationship without your mind being able to get in the way and make you question it. A sensation is a sensation, baby!

Create and work with a Spirit Sign

Spirit signs were something I started to use often when I was first on my journey and ascension process in 2017. The process is simple and easy to integrate — simply and choose something that feels significant to you — and animal, or a thing, (whatever comes to mind at first is usually a good one to start with), and hold it in your mind’s eye with the intention that this will be now be your spirit symbol and a way to receive confirmation from your guides.

It’s best to do the intention-setting part of this during a meditation or a time where you feel quiet and centred. It can be anything — when I first started, I used owls as my spirit symbol — then switched to butterflies later on. I had just finished setting my intention to use owls for my spirit symbol at work (I luckily worked in a quiet bookstore where I could get contemplative during the winters), and within an hour a customer walked in wearing an owl shirt! New to guide-connecting and spirit symbols, I couldn’t believe the synchronicity. Owls are now a deep part of my spiritual practice and communicate to me much more than a confirmation that spirit is about!

Ask for angel numbers

Asking for angel numbers is a fun way to expand the frequency and presence of your connections with your guides. Although angels numbers are not for everyone, chances are you may have come across the numbers 444 or 222 at some point in your healing and metaphysical journey. Angel numbers, while are often a type of confirmation, hold a plethora of wisdom in what each number represents. Delightfully, the internet is in relative harmony and agreement when it comes to deciphering the meaning of each angel number combo. Personally, I love to use the book “Messages in the Numbers” by Alana Fairchild. If you’re just starting out, however, keep the numbers to signs of confirmation that your guides have heard you and are nearby. 111, 222, 333, 444, 555, 666, 777, 888, and 999, are all classic angel numbers.
